Regenerate with Sprout

In collaboration with Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO)

Te Ara Tukutuku is an ongoing project that aims to restore and regenerate the northern area of Wynyard Quarter, working alongside Mana Whenua to transform its once-contaminated waters and soil into a lush, green ecosystem.

Our brief was to develop ideas that would raise awareness and maintain public interest in the project.

THE SOLUTION

An interactive digital ecosystem where users nurture, and grow alongside their virtual plants. Overtime, the collective participation gives live to the virtual biome, reflecting the regeneration of Te Ara Tukutuku.

DEVELOPMENT

I was tasked with developing the virtual biomes and user experience. I used Blender to create the 3D models and Godot to build the environment. I also coded the back end, enabling users to be matched with a plant that they could then place within the virtual biome.

THE OUTCOME

A physical installment that projects the virtue world of Te Ara Tukutuku. There will be a QR code which leads the user to a fun quiz that matches them to a native plant. They can nurture it and plant it into the virtue world. The design expresses regeneration through an interactive, visually compelling digital space. By aligning storytelling, education, and contribution.

REFLECTION

The project was highly technical and required to learn and work across multiple software platforms. The steep learning curve meant that even small changes could have significant impacts on the overall system, which made the development process both challenging and precise.

Because of this, the realisation of the importance of clear and consistent communication within the team. Any adjustment needed to be carefully discussed and understood before implementation to avoid unintended consequences. This reinforced the value of collaboration, documentation, and shared decision-making in a technical workflow.
